Simple Liver Detox - Add these 3 Foods & Bonus: Powerful Acupressure Point

Hello and Happy Spring! Here are some foods you can start to add to your grocery list to help detox and keep your liver and gallbladder healthy.  Also, stay with me because at the end of this blog, I will also share one of the best acupressure points that works directly on the liver as well as having so many added health benefits.

{As a side note, remember to subscribe to our YouTube channel. You can view this blog focused on Liver/Gallbladder health as a video and we have also created a separate category of specialized Acupressure points for you that we will be adding to regularly to help support your overall health. Our direct YouTube link is below.}

In Chinese Medicine and the practice of Qigong, Spring is related to the Wood element and the Yin organ - the Liver and Yang organ - the Gallbladder.  William James, a 19th century philosopher, reminded us that ‘with a healthy liver you will live a healthy life’. The liver is so important as it is responsible for over 500 functions supporting almost all the organs in the body. It helps with hormone balancing, synthesis of cholesterol, metabolizes  proteins, carbohydrates and fats, it produces bile to help with digestion, helps with detoxing and purification of blood and breaks down insulin. The liver’s partner, the gallbladder, will temporarily store bile secreted from the liver and release it when we consume fats to help us with digestion.

All  year long it is important to focus on our health. Eastern medicine practices follow the seasons and relate to the different organs of the body. We can add in specialized foods, use certain acupressure points, and specialized Qigong movements

that can be extra beneficial during these times for optimal health of these organs.

Spring is a time for new growth as we  build resiliency as well as flexibility.  This is the best time to support the liver and gallbladder.  Here are some foods to add in to help nourish and cleanse:

1- Eat plenty of dark leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables  like Kale - high in antioxidants, vitamin C, vitamin K & beta carotene (all good for your liver as well as your eyes, weight management, heart health, may help to lower your LDL (bad cholesterol)  and more )

2- Sour foods such as Lemons and Limes - help to stimulate nerves in the digestive tract and liver promoting proper digestion and bowel motions. Start your day with a squeeze of lemon/lime in the morning in lukewarm water to help naturally flush out pollutants. This is also said to help detox the liver from consuming alcohol.

3- Fermented foods such as Sauerkraut - the probiotics help to cleanse removing toxins and help regenerate new healthy liver cells & this will help build your immune system. Also may help to decrease fat accumulation in the liver.

As promised, I will now share with you one of the best tonic acupressure points of the body to help give your liver a jump start: Taichong - Supreme Rushing Liver 3. This is a source point and will treat the liver directly as well as affect other areas of the body.

  • Treats issues of the eyes

  • Helps with abdominal pain & distention

  • Aids with menstrual irregularities

  • Urinary issues

  • Eases insomnia & disrupted sleep

  • Headaches

  • If you eat too many fats, alcohol or medications, this point will help to detox

  • Emotionally can soothe agitation, frustration and anger

  • Help ease depression

To find this point (may be sensitive)- top of foot between big toe and second toe in the large hollow half way up the bones (metatarsals). You can use moderate direct pressure as you hold or do circular massages. I love this point and will massage this area nightly before going to bed as part of my sleep ritual.
