Urinary Tract Infections; Natural Preventative Tips - Perimenopause & Menopause

Have you ever experienced a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)? If you have, you know they are no fun. Some women may experience this only once or twice in a lifetime.  For others, UTI’s may be more of a chronic health issue that can really impact their overall lifestyle.

In this blog, I am sharing some simple preventative natural tips to help avoid and help recover from Urinary Tract Infections.

First, a few reasons behind why these may be occurring. As we move into the natural stages of perimenopause and menopause, UTI’s unfortunately can become a real issue for women. During these natural and empowering stages of a woman's life there are physical changes and symptoms that take place and may cause discomfort.  Here are a few:

  • Our hormone Estrogen begins to drop and simply put for this scenario, Estrogen is responsible for good bacteria and keeping a positive acidic environment.

  • There may be development of incontinence (muscles around the bladder may not work as they should causing urine leak).

  • Bladder prolapse ( there can be feelings of fullness, heaviness or even pain in the pelvic area).

  • Vaginal tissue thins which can lead to infections.

Remember With Knowledge There Is Power!!!

Here are a few easy to remember Natural Preventative Tips you can add into your life:

  • Be aware of the amount of fluids you are drinking a day. The more hydrated you are, the more you can flush out bad bacteria.

  • Seems like a simple step and sometimes we are rushing, yet remember to wipe front to back to help you stay CLEAN.

  • Speaking of rushing, take time on the throne (toilet) to fully empty your bladder. We women tend to be go go go, rushing all the time.  I want you to SLOW DOWN!!!

  • Avoid long baths (I know, they feel relaxing for those tense muscles and recovery from busy days) and skip douching all together.

  •  Work on strengthening those Pelvic Floor Muscles. (If you're not sure how, just send me a message or join our Membership options with access to a library full of recordings, live Zoom classes and/or added coaching sessions and much more.)

Last one:

  • Even if you don’t feel like it, make sure to pee and drink water after having sex.

*A Bonus: Acupressure points are like light switches. When turned on, they help to open up energy pathways throughout the body, called meridian lines, which cultivate flow, balance and healing. In Eastern Medicine, including Qigong practices, these meridian lines connect to the various organs in the body. There are several acupressure points to help with relief of UTI’s yet this one I am sharing with you is one of the most common ones for relief. Liver 2, ‘Xingjian’ or Moving Between is located on top of the foot between the big and first toe right at the base of the toes. Now you can apply pressure and hold (30 seconds or more) and/or massage this point (on both feet). This point is said to help experience drainage of heat for relief of pain and burning when you pee. Also, this point is great for issues with insomnia, eye pain and heavy and irregular periods. I personally love to massage this point most evenings before bed to help calm my nervous system for a restorative sleep.*

Now for those who may be experiencing chronic UTI’s and have been experiencing any of the above or different symptoms, I do advise you to speak to your health care professional. They may discuss the use of a vaginal estrogen cream and/or taking cranberry supplements (contain compounds, proanthocyanidins which can help prevent E. coli bacteria from attaching.)
